Everything About Veganism

Ga Maleven

Veganism –  A lifestyle in which seeks to exclude all forms of exploitation and other avoidable harms committed against any and all animals, including humans. A vegan does everything possible and practical to eliminate all forms of abuse towards others. Animals are not ours to eat, use, exploit, harm enslave, or mistreat in any way, fashion, or form.

Veganism is a lifestyle where you do your best to not harm others. We’re not perfect, but we try our best to live every day with compassion and consideration for those around us. Whether they be humans or non-humans alike. So, what are ways of living this kind of lifestyle?

FOOD

A vegan does not consume meat, dairy, eggs, or honey. These things come from animals. While simply not consuming animal products is referred to as a “plant-based diet,” this diet is also part of a vegan lifestyle. The reason vegans do not consume animal products is because 1) It’s unnatural. Humans are actually herbivorous and cannot properly process meat, diary, eggs, or honey. It only harms our bodies from giving us cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and many other illnesses and harms our digestive tract. 2) Consuming animals and their milk, vomit, or menstrual cycles actually causes harm to the animal. There’s no “humane” way to kill someone, and factory farms as well as “local family” farms all kill the animals in a painful manner, which is absolutely terrifying for the animals. They know they are going to be killed, and fight, struggle, and cry to get away. Milk is for babies, and in order to take milk you must steal it from the babies. Dairy farms kill calves and goat kids in order to ensure all the mothers’ milk goes to humans. On top of this, when a dairy cow or goat is no longer producing enough they are sent to slaughter, which us often when they are only 3 years old. Eggs hurt when coming out of chickens, and chickens have been genetically altered to produce more eggs than natural. This causes them to lose so much calcium that they get brittle bones and osteoporosis. On top of this, so many eggs being produced causes blockage inside of them which is painful and deadly. The birds also live in tiny cages, have their beaks cut in half, and killed when not producing enough. Bees often are fed sugar water instead of the honey they worked hard to get, their hives are often burned to start new hives, and the queen is artificially inseminated. 3) Animal products are very harmful to the planet. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, species extinction, human starvation, pollution, and climate change.

FASHION

Vegans do not wear anything from an animal, be it fur, leather, wool, downy, or skin. Animals are caught in cruel traps, raised in tiny cages on fur farms, and skinned alive for their fur. Most leather comes from India, where the bovines are taken from their owners, taken far away in a horrible trek with peppers in their eyes, and then brutally killed. Animals are anally electrocuted (A metal rod shoved in the anus and mouth and electricity pumped through them), and then skinned, often still alive. Sometimes they are beaten on the head before skinning. Sheep and goats are roughly sheered or have their wool ripped off of them painfully. They are often slammed around and killed when they are not producing enough. Birds have their downy feathers ripped off of them, and reptiles, such as pythons, are skinned alive as well.

ENTERTAINMENT

Animal entertainment comes in numerous forms, from zoos, aquariums (marine parks), and circuses, to using animals for rodeos, racing, bullfighting, horse shows, fighting, and other uses. In zoos and aquariums, animals ate kept locked in small enclosures with little to keep them entertained, thus causing them to literally go insane. Animals are continuously bred, not always when healthy, in order to bring in large crowds, and surplus animals are routinely killed. Many newborns are not able to live in captivity and die. Many zoos and marine parks will even force animals to perform tricks, just as a circus does, starving the animals to make them work for food, and hurting them with whips, canes, bullhooks, and even electrocuting them.

Other forms of animal entertainment, such as horse and greyhound racing, is solely for profit as well. Animals who do not perform are killed, and if they break a leg during a race or some other injury, they are killed, many times still on the track. Horses and dogs frequently suffer broken bones, heart failure, and other serious injuries. Dog sledding dogs are kept tied outside in all conditions and even raced until they collapsed. Horse drawn carriages and horse shows also beat the animals, overwork them, and in horse shows a horrific act known as “soring” is practiced on horses to make them lift their legs higher. This practice involves nailing the horses hooves to weights that hurt, then pouring gasoline on the horse’s ankles, burning them. They then have chains wrapped around the ankles so whenever they move their legs it bangs against the ankles, causing more pain.

Animal fighting, from dog fights, horse fights, cock fights, and other such animal fights are blood sports, all about one animal killing the other horrifically. Dogs are forced to fight, and if they do not they are killed. Cocks and stallions are made to fight over a female in heat. In the wild, a losing male would be able to run away. But, these animals are kept in a pen and made to fight until the death. Bullfighting is no different. A bull is electrocuted, kept locked in a dark area, poked, stabbed, peppersprayed, and screamed at before being allowed into the arena. Once in the arena, men on horses chase and stab spears into the bull, tiring them as the bull tries to get away, and fight to escape. Once the bull is tired enough, the matadors are released where they taunt the exhausted bull and stab a sword into their spine, just behind the skull. It is not an instant kill, so the bull dies a slow, painful death.

All of these forms of animal entertainment and others are not supported by vegans. We do not attend them, pay for them, or show any support for them. Animals are not ours to use for entertainment. There are better forms of entertainment from sports with humans who want to be playing them, movies that do not harm animals with the use of CGI, puppets, etc., and other humane forms of entertainment.

EXPERIMENTATION

Vegans do not support products tested on animals. Most experiments performed on animals later didn’t work on humans due to the differences that human bodies have to the bodies of other species. There are many similarities, since we are all animals, but the small differences make a huge difference in regards to medicine and how other chemicals react to the body of a certain species. Vivisecting isn’t even actual science, nor is yielding any useful information. The top scientists and doctors of the globe are demanding an end to it, and countries, such as India, already have banned it along with dissection, since models and images work just as well for that. Experimenting with human cells from volunteers yields more informative results.

PETS

While many animals need to stay in the wild and not be captured and kept in zoos, aquariums, circuses, or backyards, there are species who have been domesticated so much over the years it’s impossible for them to go back into the wild, or some animals may be too ill to be returned. In these cases, wild animals should remain in sanctuaries to live out their lives in peace with lots of room and as close to the wild as the sanctuary can get. With domesticated animals, they are happy to live with humans, provided the humans treat them well. Just like with children, pets need to be kept inside, kept warm, fed good food, and treated well. Never hit, yelled at, or abused in any manner, just as the same goes with children. The main issue concerning pets is breeders. Many people obtain their dogs, cats, and other animals from pet stores, who get from mills, or from breeders. Pet overpopulation is very real, especially with cats and dogs. Small animal mills also exist and are just as bad as puppy and kitten mills. With all these mills and breeders comes overpopulation, genetic disorders creating sick animals, and shelters full of pets they can;t manage. This in the end causes millions of animals to be euthanized in shelters every year. The best way to prevent these deaths is to spay and neuter your pets, adopt only from shelters/rescues, and never support breeders or mills.

Domesticated animals shouldn’t be made to do difficult tasks that are unnecessary and/or harm them. Such as horses pulling carriages simply for profit, or performing some entertainment act in circuses, dangerous stunts, fighting, etc. Animals simply are not for entertainment, nor should be forced to do things that can cause physical and/or emotional harm to them.

While working animals is heavily debated, sometimes they can perform a service that helps others, and doesn’t hurt themselves. Service animals help their humans deal with physical or emotional disabilities. People who suffer from depression, anxiety, or PTSD benefit from a service animal who helps them fight against their emotional turmoil, handle panic attacks, and bring comfort to them when out in public. Service animals are neither abused nor “slaves.” They help their humans overcome difficulties, and love helping their humans.

Working animals such as search and rescue dogs help save lives who have been lost, and drug and bomb sniffing dogs help stop potential threats and criminal activity. Police and military dogs are put in a dangerous place, but they do save lives by detecting bombs and catching dangerous criminals. While no one wants a dog, horse, or any animal to be at risk of being killed or harmed from evil people, the sad reality is this: If it takes a dog or horse with their human partner to save a hundred lives by stopping one bad person, that makes the risk worth it. I do not want any non-human animals or human to die while protecting people, whether by military or police, but sadly we live in a world with many terrible monsters, and sometimes we need heroes who have four legs instead of two. The best way to not need our furry heroes in blue and camo is to stop the evil people. Until they are stopped, we must do whatever we can to support these working animals and their partners, ensure they are brought home and not left to die, are treated as living beings with rights, and ensure upon retirement they get the best family ever to take care of them.

Pets, like any animal, are living beings who are also family. We must care for them, love them, and treat them right. Never chain them, hit them, or abuse them in any way. And give them the rights that they deserve.

REGARDS TO OTHER HUMANS

Humans are animals, and animal rights and human rights are connected. We cannot have one without the other. 95% of people who harm non-human animals turn to humans. People who work in factory farms and slaughterhouses are more likely to be domestic abusers, and serial killers and terrorists all have a history of animal abuse. It is a connection that sadly so many ignore simply because they do not value non-human animals as living beings. Furthermore, the meat, dairy, and egg industry is built on exploiting the female reproductive system to produce eggs and milk which only the female body can make, and forcing females to constantly breed to make a profit. This is a direct attack on females and the female reproductive organs, making it go against the feminist agenda. These industries also exploit the human female body to make their products seem “sexy” and “appealing” to men by comparing meat to a woman’s body.

Vegans do not hate on anyone for their religious views, sexual orientation, race, sex, age, ethnicity, etc. To attack anyone is going against the fundamentals of veganism. Veganism is about peace and compassion, and there cannot be any of that so long as people are hating each other. We cannot love and protect all non-human animals so long as we bicker, attack, and harm each other. Veganism is against any form of human exploitation, abuse, and murder. This includes rape, domestic abuse, abortion, unlawful killing, child abuse, and slavery.

To attack veganism is simply attacking peace, compassion, and equal rights. Attacking veganism supports abusers, murderers, and rapists, and keeps the world a worst place. Vegans may not be perfect, but we are doing out best to make the world a better place by not harming others. To bully and harass vegans is simply bullying and harassment. It is not funny, creative, nor necessary. And all the negative comments made about vegans simply are not true, such as the popular lie that Hitler was vegetarian, when he was quite far from that. In fact, the greatest minds were vegan or vegetarian, from Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo, Leo Tolstoy, Tesla, George Bernard Shaw, Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Plato, Charles Darwin, and others.

Vegans are not terrorists, Nazis, nor dangerous. To bully and harass peacekeepers is simply supporting violence. Why support violence?

HEALTH

Humans are natural herbivores, therefore our bodies cannot properly process animal products. Due to this, consuming animal products causes a multitude of health problems, from cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, joint pain, arthritis, eczema, etc. It even can make you not “last as long” when in the bedroom.

Humans thrive on plant-based diets, which are part of the vegan lifestyle. By removing meat, dairy, eggs, honey, and anything with them in it, humans gain more energy, are less likely to have diseases, and live longer. People on plant-based diets live an average of 10 years longer than people who consume meat. 70% of illnesses are caused by consuming animal products. These illnesses are less likely found amongst vegans. And many people who switch to plant-based diets cure diseases as well as feel better all around.

Athletes who go vegan even improve their skills in their sport, having more energy and even strength. Some of the greatest athletes are vegan. And many more athletes and celebrities go vegan not just for ethical reasons, but to improve themselves, be healthier, and make a positive impact.

It is very easy to eat vegan, and all the food is delicious. From fake meats that taste, feel and look like the real thing, to many plant-based milk options, cheeses, yogurts, icecreams, etc. Now, it’s easier to go vegan than ever. You can eat anything vegan. From Beyond Meat, Gardein, Earth Balance, to Hampton Creek, there are so many vegan food companies creating alternatives so you don’t have to miss out on taste. And with over 2,500 edible plants in the world, your food selection will only grow. You can eat all the same foods you always have eaten, only made from plants instead.

A great list of substitutes for cooking/baking can be found here: http://vegankit.com/

More and more stores are selling vegan food, but it is easy to be vegan anywhere. All fruit, vegetables, most breads, all pasta, etc. are already vegan. The majority of food you eat is free from animal products. It is easy to replace the few things that are with a plant-based alternative, or ditch altogether. Simply read the ingredients, or check for the vegan V found on food packages to ensure it is vegan friendly.

As for cost, plant-based foods are actually cheaper than eating animal products. The poorest countries eat plant-based due to it being easier to grow crops to eat instead of growing 16 times the amount of food to feed livestock and end up with very little in comparison. Consuming animal products simply uses up resources for something unnecessary. Buying plants and eating them to directly get nutrients rather than taking through another living being is cheaper, saves on resources, and helps the planet. The average vegan saves $1,000 a year on groceries. Vegetarians save an average of $775 per year.

But the greatest savings is all the animals, forests, land, wildlife, water, and resources saved every year by simply eating a plant-based diet.

There is absolutely NO valid argument against veganism. It is a lifestyle of peace and compassion that only benefits everyone. Everyone can go vegan. You eat a wider variety of foods, allergies are not a problem, and the human body can handle plant proteins better than animal proteins. And as more and more people go vegan the need for breeding and using animals decreases, bringing the overpopulation of domestic animals down. The only reason bovines, chickens, pigs, and other domesticated animals are overpopulated is due to forceful breeding of them for human greed. Without the profit being made, these industries will cease breeding, and shut down. As have many slaughterhouses, dairy farms, factory farms, fur farms, vivisecting labs, zoos, circuses, marine parks, etc. have all shut down due to more and more people going vegan. These industries only exist for profit. Without the money, they die out since humans are not dependent on them.

There is only good things to be gained by going vegan. Save a life, go vegan. And you’ll be glad you did.

“One farmer says to me, ‘You cannot live on vegetable food solely, for it furnishes nothing to make the bones with;’ and so he religiously devotes a part of his day to supplying himself with the raw material of bones; walking all the while he talks behind his oxen, which, with vegetable-made bones, jerk him and his lumbering plow along in spite of every obstacle.”- Henry David Thoreau

“Think occasionally of the suffering of which you spare yourself the sight.”- Albert Schweitzer

“Compassion for animals is intimately associated with goodness of character, and it may be confidently asserted that he who is cruel to animals cannot be a good man.”- Arthur Schopenhauer

“If you don’t like seeing pictures of violence towards animals being posted, you need to help stop the violence, not the pictures.”- Johnny Depp

“The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than blacks were made for whites, or women for men.”- Alice Walker

“The question is not, ‘Can they reason?’ nor, ‘Can they talk?’ but rather, ‘Can they suffer?”- Jeremy Bentham

“Personal purity isn’t really the issue. Not supporting animal abuse – and persuading others not to support it – is.”- Peter Singer

“But for the sake of some little mouthful of flesh we deprive a soul of the sun and light, and of that proportion of life and time it had been born into the world to enjoy.” – Plutarch

“Animals don’t have a voice, but I do. A loud one. A big f*@%’ing mouth. My voice is for them. And I’ll never shut up while they suffer.”- Ricky Gervais
“The soul is the same in all living creatures, although the body of each is different.”- Hippocrates

“We do not need to eat animals, wear animals, or use animals for entertainment purposes, and our only defense of these uses is our pleasure, amusement, and convenience.”- Gary Francione

“When I see bacon, I see a pig, I see a little friend, and that’s why I can’t eat it. Simple as that.”- Paul McCartney

“The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man.”- Charles Darwin

“It is just like man’s vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions.”- Mark Twain

“You have just dined, and however scrupulously the slaughterhouse is concealed in the graceful distance of miles, there is complicity.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“When it comes to having a central nervous system, and the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy.” – Ingrid Newark

“Animals are my friends and I don’t eat my friends.”- George Bernard Shaw
“I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being.”- Abraham Lincoln

“Of all the creatures, man is the most detestable. Of the entire brood, he’s the one that possesses malice. He is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain. The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creature that cannot.”- Mark Twain

“Life is life – whether in a cat, or dog or man. There is no difference there between a cat or a man. The idea of difference is a human conception for man’s own advantage.” – Sri Aurobindo

“Until he extends his circle of compassion to include all living things, man will not himself find peace.”- Albert Schweitzer

“We cannot have peace among men whose hearts find delight in killing any living creature.” – Rachel Carson

“Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.” – Thomas Edison

“If a kid ever realized what was involved in factory farming, they would never touch meat again.” – James Cromwell

“The horse and the cow, the rabbit and the cat, the deer and the hare, the pheasant and the lark, please us better as friends than as meat.” – élisée reclus

“Auschwitz begins whenever someone looks at a slaughterhouse and thinks: They are only animals.” – Theodor Adorno

“No animals needs to die in order for me to live. And that makes me feel good.” – Howard Lyman

“He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” – Immanuel Kant
“We all love animals. Why do we call some “pets” and others “dinner?”- K.D. Lang

“Recognize meat for what it really is: the antibiotic- and pesticide-laden corpse of a tortured animal.”- Ingrid Newkirk

“My body will not be a tomb for other creatures.” – Leonardo da Vinci

“The thinking person must oppose all cruel customs no matter how deeply rooted in tradition and surrounded by a halo. When we have a choice we must avoid bringing torment and injury into the life of another.” – Albert Schweitzer

“Deliberate cruelty to our defenceless and beautiful little cousins is surely one of the meanest and most detestable vices of which a human being can be guilty.”- William Ralph Inge

“The beef industry has contributed to more American deaths than all the wars of this century, all natural disasters, and all automobile accidents combined. If beef is your idea of “real food for real people,” you’d better live real close to a real good hospital.”- Dr Neal Barnard

“Humans – who enslave, castrate, experiment on, and fillet other animals – have had an understandable penchant for pretending animals do not feel pain. A sharp distinction between humans and ‘animals’ is essential if we are to bend them to our will, make them work for us, wear them, eat them – without any disquieting tinges of guilt or regret. It is unseemly of us, who often behave so unfeeling toward other animals, to contend that only humans can suffer. The behavior of other animals renders such pretensions specious. They are just too much like us.” – Carl Sagan
